How to Protect Migrating Birds from Flying into Your Windows

On a lovely day in late spring, moms were chatting, and children playing when "THUD". The sickening sound of a bird hitting a window sounded through our home. The children rushed outside to help the poor creature, while the moms called to them not to touch the poor creature.

Thankfully, that bird eventually regained consciousness and flew away. However, some have not been so lucky. It seems that every year we lose at least one bird each spring and fall to collisions with our windows. This year, when the first startled bird knocked at the window, I decided we needed to do something to try to prevent the birds from flying into our windows. So far, it seems to be working well, so if you have birds flying into your windows, I recommend you try this simple craft.

Materials

Aluminum foil
Tooth picks
Towels to go under the foil

Place a piece of foil on the towel.  Then use the tooth pick to make a beautiful design in the foil.

When you are finished, tape the foil to your window.  From the inside, you have a pretty, lighted design.

From the outside you have an obvious obstacle that the birds know they cannot fly through.

We made designs for the whole east side of our house. We're enjoying our artwork, and the birds are flying safely around yard. We expect to see some babies soon!
